This session will guide you through a real-world approach to cancer patients receiving immunotherapy. Gain confidence when your patient starts with, “I’m on a -mab”. When we hear ‘cancer treatment’ most of us think of chemotherapy and the adverse events related to that modality. Immunotherapy is a whole new ballgame regarding treatment success but also the presentations and treatments of adverse events. We start with mechanisms behind chemotherapy and immunotherapy to understand how the adverse events differ. If patients on chemotherapy are ‘immunosuppressed’, how should we think about immunotherapy? Can I give steroids? Who requires admission? What should scare the bejesus out of me? We’ll address these questions and what you need to know when you talk to the oncologist with a straightforward, logical approach. Recorded on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

One of the most difficult and legally risky situations in prehospital and emergency department care is the patient refusal of EMS transport which correlates to the “against medical advice” final ED disposition. This topic is far from straightforward for EMS and EM learners and teachers alike, and the concepts can also overlap when giving online EMS medical direction. This discussion introduces the concept of high-risk and difficult refusals of care and a novel mnemonic that will hopefully alleviate your FEARS the next time you care for a complex patient that decides hospital transport or ED treatment isn’t in the cards. The STAR method is a well-known method used in interviews, particularly focused on behavioral-style questions. It is a method that is easy to learn and creates a story that engages the listener and demonstrates strengths in a clear, concise, and easy-to-follow manner. This is a method taught in courses on leadership and career navigation and published in a wide array of literature. In this session, we will use a combination of lecture and small group exercises that give the attendee tools to build 5-7 versatile STARs that can be used in a host of different questions, conversations, and situations. Having these "STARs" in one's pocket at any given time will create confidence and help the physician discover and articulate strengths with ease. Recorded on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
