AAEM24 - LGBTQIA+ Belonging in a Time of Division

Equity and inclusion that reflects our multifaceted society is desirable in EM since we care for all patients. LGBTQIA+ patients face unique challenges and barriers, yet societal division has led to exclusion, including from medical treatment.   Census suggests 12% of Americans identify other than heterosexual, many who experience homophobia and discrimination.  Inclusion and belonging are necessary for well-being and trust, and to optimize patient health.  Institutional and legal factors can adversely impact the LGBTQIA+ patients and can significantly affect their wellness and health.   All EM physicians should become competent in LGBTQIA+ healthcare and comfortable caring for LGBTQIA+ patients. This session will advance knowledge of experiences and barriers faced by LGBTQIA+ patients and review methods to create inclusive and belonging environments for LGBTQIA+ patients. This session was recorded on Monday, April 29, 2024 at the 30th Annual Scientific Assembly (AAEM24) in Austin, TX.
