The care of geriatric patients is often complicated by unique physiologic, social, and ethical challenges. In caring for these complex patients, emergency physicians attempt to balance evidence-based practice with efficient, patient-centered care. The lines between evidence-based practice, expert opinion, and historical dogma in geriatric patients are blurry. This session will focus on the top challenges emergency physicians face in the care of geriatric patients. Through case-based learning, this session will present the evidence and rationale for varying approaches to such challenges with a point-counterpoint presentation by two experts in the field of geriatric emergency medicine. Audience participation and input will be sought as we seek to answer these challenging questions and provide emergency physicians with the tools necessary to care for our older adult patients.
