Emergency physicians treat violent injuries regularly and are experts in this care. Unfortunately, many injured patients carry a substantial history of prior physical or psychological trauma that directly affects the doctor-patient relationship. In considering the effects of prior trauma, clinicians can adjust their approach: a concept known as trauma-informed care. This approach is based on 4 pillars: knowledge of the effect of trauma, recognizing the signs and symptoms of trauma, avoiding retraumatization, and policy development. This session will provide clinicians with tangible aspects of trauma-informed care for immediate use at the bedside.
