The purpose of this talk is to provide an introduction to the most common bariatric surgeries performed and common life threatening complications we as emergency medicine doctors need to know to quickly identify and manage in the emergency department. We will cover the common procedures, the anatomic changes associated with these procedures, and subsequent cannot miss complications. We will also cover the unique timing of these complications, various imaging modalities to assess the bariatric patients, and key management steps.
